Dr Backer is the Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Kentucky Children's Hospital in the Joint Pediatric Heart Care program of Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Kentucky Children's Hospital. He is a past President of the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society and a current Director on the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is the co-editor of the textbook Pediatric Cardiac Surgery - now in the 5 th edition. He has published extensively on the topic of Regionalization of Congenital Heart surgery and is co chair with Dr Sara Pasquali of the CHSS project to develope guidelines and standards for Congenital Heart Surgery programs.
