Dr. Mastropietro completed his medical school education at Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2000 and completed pediatric residency and pediatric fellowship training within the New York-Presbyterian Hospital System in 2003 and 2006, respectively. He spent the first half of his career as a pediatric intensivist at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. During these formative years, he conducted clinical research on the use of arginine vasopressin after pediatric cardiac surgery and completed multiple other research studies examining postoperative complications that occur in these fragile children such as extubation failure and chronic respiratory failure necessitating tracheostomy. In 2013, he moved to Indianapolis, IN, where he accepted the role of Medical Director of the Pediatric Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. During his tenure in the position, from 2013 to 2019, he oversaw many important patient care initiatives including the establishment of a formal ECPR program, a collaborative care model with neonatal intensivists to provide care to neonates with critical heart disease preoperatively through discharge, and growth and development of the cardiovascular APP team. He currently serves as the Director of Cardiovascular Research and Education at Riley Hospital for Children. Additionally, since 2015, he has led the multicenter collaborative known as CoRe-PCICS, or Collaborative Research from the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society. Through this collaboration, he has completed several multicenter studies that have provided meaningful data to the pediatric cardiac critical care community.
