Peter was initially trained in general pediatrics at the ErasmusMC/Sophia children’s hospital in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. After qualifying as consultant pediatrician in 2005 he went on to sub specialise in Paediatric Intensive Care at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, from 2005 to 2008. After qualifying in January 2009 he became a consultant at the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at the Leiden University Medical Center where he is director of the cardiac ECMO program. His current research focuses on (postoperative) heart failure, ECMO, anticoagulation, impact of infections, and pharmacokinetics of low-molecular weight heparin and Levosimendan. The tiltel of his Phd (May 2021) was "Matters of the heart: clinical studies in pediatric cardiac intensive care". Since 2017 he is the director of the PICU which main focus is care of children with congenital heart disease.
