Dr. Melissa Smith-Parrish grew up in Ohio where she completed the Midwest circuit for education and training: Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (2007), Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for pediatrics residency (2010), and the University of Michigan for both pediatric cardiology (2013) and pediatric critical care medicine fellowships (2015). She also completed a master’s degree in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety (2018). Dr. Smith-Parrish served as an attending physician at both Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital (2015-2017) and Boston Children's Hospital (2017-2021) prior to accepting her current position. Her major academic interest is optimizing outcomes in neonates following cardiac surgery and she has led numerous quality improvement initiatives with this global aim in mind, most recently focusing on timing of delayed sternal closure, implementing routine EEG monitoring, and creating a multi-disciplinary collaborative focused on neonatal outcomes. Dr. Smith-Parrish has been married to her husband Jeremy for 16 years. She is the mother of a 12-year-old daughter (Madelyn), a 9 year-old son (Åndrew), a rescue dog (Zoey), a rescue cat (Zelda) and an African dwarf frog (Coral). When she isn't keeping her unit in order or caring for patients, she enjoys baking, kayaking, and exploring the 50 states with her family, especially the national parks.
