R. Norman Harden, MD
Dr. Harden received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in June 1984. He performed an internship and residency in Neurology at the Medical University of South Carolina from 1984 to 1988. Subsequent training included a Fellowship in pain management at the Pain Control and Rehabilitation Institute of Georgia (Emory University) and an observership in Cancer Pain Control at Memorial Sloan-Kettering (Cornell University) in 1989.
From 1994 to 2015, Dr. Harden served as the Director of the Center for Pain Studies and founded and directed the Chronic Pain Care Center at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He is now Professor Emeritus in the departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences at Northwestern University. He currently serves as the Chair of the Research Committee of the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Association and the American Academy of Pain Medicine. He is chairman of the International Research Consortium for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
Dr. Harden is currently a Deputy Editor of Pain Medicine and serves on the editorial board and as a reviewer for numerous journals. He has edited 5 books and published hundreds of original peer reviewed articles in the pain literature and over two hundred chapters, reviews and abstracts in prominent medical journals
Clinical expertise in pain management includes Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (also known as RSD), fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, pain in older patients, pain in rehabilitation diagnoses, myofascial pain syndrome and headache.
Dr. Harden’s research primarily focuses on the study of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, pain in rehabilitation diagnoses (post amputation pain, post stroke pain and spinal cord injury pain), musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, osteoarthritis, the placebo response and
