Director for Offshore Wind Guest Lyngby, Hovedstaden, Denmark
Presentation Description: This year, Maersk Supply Service announced an innovative newbuild Wind Installation Vessel that will be +30% more efficient than the conventional jack-up installation method, as well as being Jones Act compliant.
The innovation journey that Maersk Supply Service embarked on, in the lead-up to successfully closing the WTG installation contracts with Equinor for the Empire Wind and Beacon Wind projects, was full of challenges and obstacles. And it is clear that the current design was very far from the first ideas five years ago.
The presentation will showcase some of the solutions we invented in order to avoid using a jack-up for the installation of offshore wind turbines – and how they all failed one way or another, before we finally ended up with this innovative and radically more efficient jack-up solution that may transform the industry. The solution is fully Jones Act compliant and, despite being a European jack-up, will create quite a substantial amount of local content in the US. The roles between the US partner Kirby Corporation and Maersk Supply Service will be explained in the presentation.
The presentation will exemplify some of the projects that failed, and the steps involved, as well as deep dive into the final design that will be used for the Equinor projects.
Innovation never stops and we will hopefully pass on some good advice for others to follow, should they plan to embark on an innovation journey.
