Wendy Garretson has been a critical care RN for the past 40 years, specializing in cardiac nursing. Wendy is a New Orleans native, receiving both her BSN and Master's in Nursing from LSU. Wendy began teaching at Delgado Community College-Charity School of Nursing in 2004, conducting clinical on the same Coronary Care Unit that she worked on. In addition to these years as a nursing educator, Wendy has embraced the roles of bedside staff RN in MICU, CCU, ER and OR. She served as the Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist at Saratoga Hospital in upstate New York for 6 years and 20 years as a pharmaceutical educator for Genentech, Inc.
As a nursing educator, Wendy is passionate about recognition of her nursing students in an effort to provide an environment conducive to their learning! Wendy teaches in Level IV at DCC-CSN, which focuses on the acute life-threatening issues of adult patients. She shares her love of perfusion in the classroom and clinical, teaching the exemplars of dysrthythmias and acute coronary syndrome, among others. Wendy has presented at multiple conferences, including AACN's National Teaching Institute in Boston, Orlando and New Orleans. She was proud to present her poster on The Effectiveness of Meaningful Recognition at the 2019 OADN Conference in Louisville Kentucky. She likewise presented this content at NISOD's May, 2019 Conference in Austin, Texas.
Wendy is the proud corresponding author of "Rebuilding New Orleans: One Nurse at a Time" (2007) and "From Katrina to COVID-19: Still Rebuilding New Orleans, One Nurse at a time" (2020), both published in Teaching and Learning in Nursing.
