705 - Owning our Situational Awareness: The Building Blocks of Clinical Reasoning

The science to support situational awareness (SA) in many disciplines, such as aviation, can inform the cognitive processing or building blocks of clinical reasoning that serves as a precursor to clinical judgment. SA is defined as the process of collecting data, assigning meaning to the data and anticipating next steps. Developing clinical reasoning is a skill that can be learned, practiced and refined - much like conditioning of an elite physical sport such as gymanstics! Educators can help learners flext these clinical reasoning skills in clinical, lab and classroom environments to create opportunities that promote reasonig in clinical context. This session will define SA and established tools that support its development and align that with the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model. We will introduce a process (ARISE) to help learners condition their cognitive muscles and advance their clinical judgement. This process can help learners that grapple to understand sometimes abstract concepts like “clinical reasoning” and “clinical judgment”. Transforming these abstract concepts into skills that learners can consciously activate and use in the clinical context can advance their clinical reasoning ability. We will introduce a step-wise process for educators to guide learners through the critical steps of "thinking in context". ARISE is an acronym that stands for Appreciate, Recognize, Invite, Speak-Out, and Engage.
