Learn about an innovative approach to clinical education where fully-engaged nursing students made a profound impact during challenging health-education events. Three evidence-based practices were combined into one clinical experience where diversity, equity, and inclusion were the focus of compassionate health care and student learning was deeply enriched.
This presentation describes an innovative approach to clinical education where fully-engaged nursing students and faculty made a profound impact on the health of local communities during a challenging evidence-based health-education event called Teen Maze. Modern nurse graduates must enter complex healthcare environments with a variety of skills – sound clinical judgement, grounded professionalism, realistic flexibility, and persuasive advocacy to promote inclusive, equitable care for diverse populations. To help students build these skills, faculty combined three evidence-based practices into one clinical experience that greatly benefited students and the community: TeamSTEPPs communication skills (AHRQ, 2022), Interprofessional Core Competencies (IPEC, 2016), and eight domains of high-impact teaching/learning practice. Students benefit when high impact practices (HIP) engage them in meaningful active learning experiences.
When community diversity, equity, and inclusion are the focus of learning compassionate health care, students and the community are enriched and connected in a deep way. Additionally, an interdisciplinary faculty team developed engaging interprofessional education (IPE) sessions across four semesters in two associate degree healthcare programs: Nursing and Dental Hygiene. This presentation addresses the experiences, process, and outcomes of a faculty team who learned much about, from, and with each other while enhancing student education and who were recognized as outstanding leaders in the community event. The presenters hope to inspire other faculty to engage with local communities and create new clinical experiences that prepare future nurses while simultaneously improving the health of local communities.
