Evolving Strategies for Difficult-To-Treat Epilepsy: Dravet Syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex

This talk will provide a brief overview of 3 difficult-to-treat pediatric epilepsies, including Dravet Syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.
The initial portion of the talk will review the characteristic clinical features including seizure types and EEG features as well as estimated incidence rates of these three disorders. The commonly-associated co-morbidities including intellectual disability, behavioral problems, sleep problems and risk of sudden unexpected death will be reviewed.
The latter portion of the talk will focus on treatment, including antiseizure medications, dietary and surgical treatments, as well as neuromodulation options. A major focus will be on recently approved therapies, with a summary of the recent clinical trials of pharmaceutical grade CBD, fenfluramine, stiripentol and everolimus. Finally a brief summary of ongoing trials will be provided.
