The COVID-19 pandemic has exasperated the already urgent youth mental health crisis. Schools are the primary providers of mental health services for many children, but there is a severe shortage of school mental health personnel. Schools cannot meet these needs alone – they need help to empower parents, increase community knowledge and train educators to support student mental health. Learn more about the resources available to schools that educate, support and empower parents to become protective factors supporting their child’s mental health and the issues of mental health access, particularly in rural or low-income areas.
Learning Objectives:
Assess factors affecting the youth mental health crisis, including social media and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Review research supporting parental influence and give examples of how parents and families can be protective factors in youth mental wellness and suicide prevention.
Investigate resources available for parents and educators and create an action plan to connect parents with accessible mental health resources.
