With the nation facing a dual opioid/stimulant epidemics amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the need has never been greater for a solution. Contingency management (CM) is the best-evidenced, most effective, most cost-effective – yet least utilized – approach for addressing substance use disorders (SUD). After 100 random-control trials, technology is finally delivering CM’s promise. With consistent effects showing a doubling of abstinence rates over usual care, it’s time to adopt CM into routine care. We’ll explore how states have started providing CM through 1115 Medicaid waivers and other funding mechanisms.
