Dr. Frank E. Shelp has held positions in academic, public, private and national corporate settings. As the inaugural commissioner of Georgia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, Dr. Shelp successfully resolved litigation by the U.S. Justice Department in a civil settlement and began the transition of the state from a facility-based custodial care model to a community based active treatment and recovery model. He trained in psychiatry at Duke University and public health at UNC Chapel Hill. He is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, where he has served on the Policy and Long-Term Planning Committee. He is also a charter member of the National Council for Behavioral Health Medical Directors’ Institute. Dr. Shelp is currently the Eastern Regional Sr. Medical Director for Centene Behavioral Health, a national managed care organization for government supported healthcare programs, Medicaid, Medicare and subsidized ACA programs.
He is also the psychiatrist for Dickenson County Behavioral Health Services, an Appalacian Community Service Board in far Southwestern Virginia and practices Geriatric psychiatry at a large retirement community in Richmond, Va.
