Dr. Jonathan P. Edwards is a public health advisor, educator, and consultant. He identifies as a person in long-term recovery which is the driving force behind his worldview, advocacy, scholarship, and professional focus. Dr. Edwards has been influential in advancing peer support workforce development initiatives including certification and supervision in mental health and substance use treatment settings at the local and national levels. His research explores the impact of organizational culture on job satisfaction, supervision practices, and recovery orientation.
Dr. Edwards received his M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Social Welfare from CUNY Graduate Center, his Master’s in Social Work from Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, and is a licensed clinical social worker. He is also an adjunct professor at Columbia School of Social Work, a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers, a New York Certified Peer Specialist, and a Certified Personal Medicine Coach. Dr. Edwards has served on the New York Peer Specialist Certification Board since its inception in 2014 and served on several technical expert panels led by SAMHSA to inform the recent development of National Model Standards for Peer Support Specialist Certification, and to establish a National Recovery Research agenda.
Dr. Edwards has co-authored several articles on peer support workforce issues, including Job Satisfaction Among Mental Health Peer Support Workers (Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal) and, under review, Five Critical Functions of Supervision based on a model he developed in 2016 (American Journal of Psychiatric Rehabilitation). In addition to a book chapter on LGBTQIA+ Health Among People of Color, Dr. Edwards co-edited the recently published, “What It Takes: Wisdom From Peer Support Specialists and Supervisors." He is the recipient of several prestigious awards, and has also been a guest speaker on several podcasts.
