988 is a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts, are at risk of suicide or struggle with emotional distress. Preparing for full 988 implementation and operational readiness requires a bold vision. We will discuss the Best Practice Toolkit, legislative and programmatic history, the current configuration of the Lifeline system, the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act of 2020 and the planned 988 rollout, recent planning activity toward implementation readiness and the roadmap and specific activities the federal government and partners can build on.

Learning Objectives:

Identify limitations and challenges in the current crisis system of care from the perspective of the individual in crisis.
Identify key components of the SAMHSA Best Practice Toolkit for Behavioral Health Crisis Care.
Review the relationship between SAMHSA and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
Review planning work with states and other key partners to determine gaps and needs toward implementation.
Examine the federal roadmap and examples of specific actions to build upon the Toolkit framework
