Marcus Bianchi is a senior research engineer with the Building Technologies and Science Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where he also leads the business development activities to coordinate external funding and collaborations with other research institutes. He is a thermal energy expert and conducts research in modeling, analysis, and testing of advanced building envelope components and systems to improve the energy performance of buildings. Bianchi returned to NREL in 2019 after eight years at Owens Corning, where he led the Building Science team and did extensive work overseas, particularly in Latin America (Brazil, Chile, Mexico). Before joining NREL in 2009, Marcus was principal scientist at Johns Manville, performing insulation heat transfer research, and a professor in mechanical engineering at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul and at Purdue University. He is active at ASHRAE, where he was chair of Technical Committee 4.4—Building Materials and Building Envelope Performance, now serving as Research Subcommittee Chair for that committee. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and is a licensed professional engineer in Colorado.
