Gone are the days when Home Performance is driven purely by energy savings, cost effectiveness, or simple comfort goals. With aggressive state and municipal goals, “Electrification” and “decarbonization'' are the new policy drivers, replacing traditional energy savings. These goals cannot be met with traditional insulation, air sealing, and high efficiency carbon fueled heating and hot water systems alone. This new reality dramatically changes the traditional ways that cost effectiveness are determined and considered. Contractors must reevaluate work done in homes in light of the impact on carbon creation/reduction. Heat pumps, and how to prepare for them, comes to the fore as carbon-based appliances become less attractive in the paradigm of decarbonization. The traditional Home Performance Business approach will need to change. This panel discussion will explore the many ways that the goals of decarbonization/electrification differ from the past, and, most importantly, how to adapt to the new market landscape. We’ll discuss: customer optics, lead generation, incentive structures, creating scalable business processes, workforce development, and the relative importance of envelope improvements, heat pumps, in the future of the Home Performance industry; all in light of this new paradigm. Sponsored by the Building Performance Contractors Association of New York (BPCA-NY).
