High MERV filters installed in air handlers with sufficient run-time can provide significant filtration, removing fine particles from the air in a home. However, this filtration may come with significant costs, both in fan and building energy costs & HVAC system performance. This session will provide an overview of particles & health as well as filter performance. Results from the ROCIS (http://ROCIS.org) initiative's efforts to retrofit furnaces/CAC with better filters & address system limitations so that air handlers can be operated for longer runtimes will be summarized. Particle counts were measured under different conditions. Pre- and post-diagnostic tests determined the fan energy, total external static, & air flow. The challenge of filter replacement & cost will be discussed. Implications for HVAC system replacement will be highlighted.
Learning Objectives:
By attending this session, attendees will:
Recognize the potential health benefits of substantially reducing exposure to particles (.1 to 5 microns), & the role of filtration in addressing particles generated inside & outside of a home
Be able to describe the interactions that can result from the use of higher MERV filters, & longer air handler run-times, as well as specific strategies to minimize adverse impacts
Be able to list 5 things to consider to determine the appropriateness of using a higher MERV filter, & operating an air handler system 50% or more of the time
