Today infusion providers are seeing the per diem questioned by the payer community more than ever. At the base of these denials is often a lack of understanding of the concept of per diem and the absolute necessity of it for providers to remain viable. It is critical that providers have a detailed understanding of the history and application of this standard of practice and why it was implemented on a national level. This presentation will address the importance and legal implications of standards of practice, the history of the per diem concept, why it was implemented across the country, all conceptual elements as to how it works, ethical implications, and a series of arguments, positions and tactics that can be applied in its defense.
