Venous depletion is a growing concern in infusion therapy; yet vascular access assessment and planning rarely address the easy subcutaneous route. We aim to promote uptake of this route through systematically determining the efficacy, safety, acceptability and efficiency of subcutaneous (SUBQ) hydration and medication infusions in any patient population and, secondarily, to identify the mechanisms of subcutaneous access used to achieve these outcomes through the validation of an integrated care pathway. This roundtable will review results of a systematic review of use of subQ administration.
Learning Objectives:
Determine the safety, efficacy, acceptability and efficiency of subcutaneous access as an alternate route to IV through presentation of a systematic review findings on subcutaneous infusion therapy.
Understand the mechanisms of SQ infusion therapy (e.g., medications, rates, volumes, sites).
