Providing effective patient education requires nurses to identify the patient’s determinants of learning. An assessment of the learner (patient or caregiver) will reveal learning needs, readiness to learn, and learning style. Understanding the determinants of learning and adjusting the delivery of education to meet the needs of the patient/caregiver can be the difference in therapeutic outcomes.
