Matthew D. Batastini is Managing Partner at Schwartz Hannum PC and a member of the Firm’s Employment and Education Practice groups.
Matthew counsels the Firm’s corporate and education clients on all aspects of the employment relationship, and represents those clients in state and federal courts and before agencies, including the EEOC, MCAD, NYSDHR, DOL, OSHA, and NLRB. He has defended clients against claims involving discrimination, harassment, whistleblowing, wage and hour laws, trade secrets, breaches of non-compete or other restrictive covenants, and executive compensation. He has extensive experience advising clients on the drafting and enforceability of post-employment restrictions.
Matthew counsels the Firm’s education clients on a broad range of issues including crafting and implementing policies and practices applicable to students, employees and the larger school community. He has conducted investigations for and regularly counsels schools with respect to the investigation of and response to allegations of employee and student misconduct, including preparing and making mandatory reports. Matthew also assists education clients with updating faculty contracts, handbooks and school by-laws, assessing risk management strategies for off-campus trips, third party use of school facilities and vendor contracts, and responding to subpoenas seeking the production of student records.
Before he joined the Firm, Matthew spent four years as an associate attorney at Proskauer Rose LLP in its New Jersey and Boston offices. Prior to his time at Proskauer, Matthew was an associate with Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP (now Locke Lord) in Madison, NJ for five years. Matthew graduated from Middlebury College with a B.A. in Economics and received his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law. He enjoys volunteering as an alumni interviewer at Middlebury College.
