Media Esser is a nurse scientist, neonatal nurse practitioner, and board-certified wound nurse that currently practices in a level II NICU in Green Bay, WI. Dr. Esser also holds the position of assistant professor and Neonatal NP Program Chair at Alverno College in Milwaukee, WI. Dr. Esser is also a consultant for evidence-based practice, NICU review course content, quality improvement, skin care research and presents on these topics on local and national levels.
Dr. Esser received her PhD in Nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2019 and graduated from StonyBrook University with her MSN Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Esser’s is passionate about neonatal skin care, specifically diaper dermatitis in the NICU, and has published several manuscripts and chapters on the topic.
Dr. Esser holds a strong commitment to the community of neonatal nurses and has been involved locally and nationally with the NANN. She served as the president of the State of Wisconsin chapter of the NANN, and currently serves as a Director-at-Large for NANN as the liaison for the research activities and the Section on Neonatal Perinatal Medicine (SONPM) with the American Association of Pediatrics. She is currently a mentor for a NANN Research Fellow with a research focus related to costs associated with diaper dermatitis care in the NICU.
Her interest in diaper dermatitis in the NICU soared with participation as a fellow in the Sigma Theta Tau Maternal Child Health Leadership Academy with a project focused on brining awareness to the numerous skin injuries in the NICU. The project activites included the development of a NICU skin team and a method of data collection for skin injury issues to then promote continuous quality improvement. Dr. Esser has received the Julie Lanthrop Research Award for Junior Investigator and most recently received the Distinguished Service Award from NANN.
