Mary C. Sullivan, PhD, RN, FAAN is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Rhode Island, College of Nursing. Her scholarly focus is in the field of developmental pediatrics, particularly outcomes of premature infants. Her research program examines the health and development of premature infants in a series of longitudinal studies funded by the National Institutes of Health. The current study is one of the longest in the U.S. at age 30. Working from a perspective of stress and life course theory, Dr. Sullivan and her colleague examine the impact of prematurity, medical history, and environments on adult health, function, behavior and achievement. Novel biomarkers include inflammation, metabolism, neuroendocrine and cardiovascular function, and epigenetics. The aim is to learn how prematurity impacts adult function, the potential for resilience and protective effects to pinpoint optimal times and content for intervention.
