Dr. Michelle Whalen, DNP, NNP-BC, CNE, is an Advanced Practice Nurse within a Level IV Neonatal ICU at the University of Michigan. In addition she is also an Associate Professor within the McAuley School of Nursing at the University of Detroit Mercy teaching throughout all academic programs and levels. Dr. Whalen has dedicated her 20+ year nursing career to improving patient outcomes via research and education and providing mentorship to peers seeking to advance their own professional development. Dr. Whalen obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Saginaw Valley State University, Master of Science from the State University of New York at Stonybrook, and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Michigan. Clinically, Dr. Whalen has led many projects that continue to elevate nursing as a profession, mentoring colleauges and students alike. Her concern for the well-being of others is evidenced by her ongoing initiative to address the ongoing stress experienced by healthcare providers throughout the pandemic. She has published work focused on simulation driven parent education than demonstrated improved outcomes for medically complex children, including those dependant on home ventilators, and is currently collaborating with colleagues at Boston Children's, CHOP, and John Hopkins working to build a family drivein simulation program to better support families caring for complex children post discharge.
