Summer Segal, PhD, MS, LCGC is a grief support specialist and perinatal palliative care coordinator with the Pediatric Pain, Palliative, and Integrative Medicine Center at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, San Francisco. She cares for patients and families who are adjusting to a new diagnosis or prognosis, living with serious illness, or coping with pregnancy and child loss. Dr. Segal entered the field of palliative medicine by way of her work as a genetic counselor, which focused on improving quality of life for children and adults with rare diseases.
Dr. Segal’s educational efforts address the intersection of psychology, philosophy, and spirituality in the service of relationship-centered care and are aimed at helping healthcare providers deepen their therapeutic skills. Her research interests include working with clinicians on attending to suffering, facilitating healing, and cultivating resilience.
Dr. Segal has a master’s degree in health and medical sciences from the genetic counseling program at the University of California, Berkeley. She earned a doctorate in existential and transpersonal psychology from Saybrook University. She is trained in contemplative and consciousness studies, and holds certifications in existential-humanistic therapy, mindfulness-based grief counseling, and depth hypnosis.
