Optimal pain management is a vital component of high-quality neonatal care. Studies in preterm infant’s show that repeated painful stimuli early in life have short and long term consequences including physiologic instability, altered brain development and abnormal stress response systems that persist into childhood. The use of a pain assessment tool provides a common language to allow multidisciplinary teams to discuss an appropriate pain plan. Through a collaborative quality improvement project with the implementation of post-operative pain management algorithms, improvement in staff satisfaction of pain management in the neonate can be achieved, while significantly decreasing the cumulative opioid exposure in the acute post-operative period.
