There has not been a new drug approved to improve the survival or outcomes of premature babies in over 25 years. It's time to change that. The issue of clinical trial consent becomes very sensitive when the patient is a baby. I plan to offer recommendations on how to improve research communication between all stakeholders in the NICU, including physicians, researchers, nurses, and parents so that more parents feel confident consenting to clinical trials, which will lead to the success of future babies.

At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

Contribute to developing a culture of research in their NICUs or nursing programs
Explain to parents why they should embrace the concept of research as core to the NICU mission, and research as an essential component to improving outcomes for all babies
Summarize the value of engaging NICU graduate parents and families in all aspects of research, including trial design, approach and implementation
Advocate for nurses to be informed of both ongoing and proposed clinical research so that they can best advise parents on the safety and procedures to encourage consent
