Children and neonates with tracheostomies and mechanical ventilation are complex requiring a multidisciplinary team to manage the comorbidities and ensure the safest care within the hospital and community. These children are high risk for adverse events and complications. This presentation will discuss the building of a tracheostomy and airway program for an urban children's hospital; including developing an education program and the use of high fidelity tracheostomy simulation in the management and prevention of adverse tracheostomy emergencies.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

Describe tracheostomy management and airway management concerns in the neonatal population
Discuss components necessary for a successful tracheostomy education program in the NICU
Describe how to design, track and measure outcomes for quality improvement projects surrounding tracheostomy patients
Incorporate evidence supporting tracheostomy education and high fidelity simulation in the prevention of tracheostomy related adverse events
