Historically, science and scientists could function in relative isolation from the rest of society, but that is no longer true. In the digital age, both real and fake scientific information flows speedily through society. Thus, it is essential that actual scientific facts are the basis of public communication by scientists and that scientists learn to communicate effectively to public audiences. Fortunately, there is a science basis to help shape effective scientific communication from which scientists should learn.
