Gilman W. Whiting, Ph.D. (Purdue University), serves Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee in many capacities. He is an Associate Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of African American and Diaspora Studies; Director of the Scholar Identity Institute (TM), and Black Male Initiative; and is the founding chair of the Achievement Gap Institute at the George W.
Peabody College of Education.
Dr. Whiting's areas of research include educational disparity; special and gifted education; sociology of race, sports, and American culture; research methods, and fatherhood initiatives.
Dr. Whiting has authored more than 80 scholarly articles published in journals such as: Gifted Child Quarterly, Roeper Review, Journal for Secondary Gifted Education, and The International Journal of Sport and Society. He is a co-editor for Black Masculinity Revisted, a book on manliness and has authored numerous book chapters.
Dr. Whiting created the Scholar Identity Modelâ„¢, a psycho-social model to assist whole communities in rethinking ways to combat academic apathy, along with equity in GATE & educator training. He consults with school districts and programs both nationally and internationally.
