Sylvan Taylor is the Schoolwide Enrichment Teacher and Academically/ Intellectually Gifted Catalyst Teacher at The Downtown School, a public prek-8th grade magnet in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, focused on the Renzulli Schoolwide Enrichment Model. This is her 19th year as an educator; with experience as a regular education classroom teacher, a teacher of gifted children, owner of a small play-based preschool and in-home childcare, and a university level instructor and supervisor of student teachers. She is a recognized Teacher Leader in Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools' Teacher Academy Program and has served as a model classroom/ mentor teacher and professional development leader at the school and district level.
Sylvan holds a Master of Science in Elementary Education from University of Mary Washington, certification in regular education prek-6 and gifted education K-12, and National Board Certification as a Generalist/ Middle Childhood. Her research interests include inquiry-based and student-directed learning, the principles of playwork, equity in gifted education, environmental education, and the intersections among these areas. She has presented nationally on these topics in a variety of settings. This is her third year presenting at the NAGC National Convention.
