Short description: Social-emotional “Learning” (SEL) suggests that wellbeing is not a fixed “trait” but is teachable. This is consistent with the concept of giftedness as developmental in the talent development framework. Additionally, research highlights certain psycho-social skills that support talent development toward eminence, including positive risk-taking, self-advocacy, and receptiveness to feedback. This session explores strategies for integrating SEL instruction in challenging academic environments.

Gain understanding of the relationship between psycho-social skills and talent development
Compare and contrast views of affective curricula in the traditional gifted education paradigm and the talent development paradigm
Gain practical strategies for embedding SEL in academically rigorous learning experiences
