Maggie is the Lead for Regional Education Initiatives and Partnerships at the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs (WHA) at the U.S. Department of State (DOS). She brings over 22 years of experience cultivating and managing partnerships across sectors in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State, Fulbright Commissions, Ministries of Education, and higher education institutions in the Latin America, India, Europe, and the United States.
Maggie leads the hemisphere-wide education initiative – 100,000 Strong in the Americas Innovation Fund -- the signature public-private sector partnership for the Department and U.S. embassies -- in collaboration with NGOs, regional private/public sectors, government entities, and hundreds of higher education institutions in the United States and Latin America. She builds networks and opportunities across governments, business, NGOs, and academic sectors to increase partnerships that benefit institutions, faculty, and students and strengthen regional education cooperation. Under her leadership at WHA/DOS, the 100K Fund has grown from an unfunded mandate to a $22+ million portfolio in seven years that currently engages 30 regional companies, foundations, NGOs, and hundreds of HEIs in the United States and Latin America.
Prior to joining WHA/DOS, Maggie served as the Deputy Director at the Fulbright Commission in Mexico (COMEXUS) for 8+ years where she was the managing director of 12 large-scale Fulbright academic exchange programs funded by the Mexican and US governments, US-Mission-Mexico, private sector, and other entities. Maggie has also held leadership positions at IIE and FHI-360 (Center for Academic Programs) in Washington, DC.
Maggie is a former Fulbright grantee to Mexico in the area of TESOL, and she designed and conducted training programs for 100s of Mexican educators. She also has ESL/EFL teaching experience at secondary and university levels in both Mexico and the USA. Maggie speaks Spanish fluently and gives frequent presentations at domestic, regional and international education events.
Maggie is honored to have received the Executive Staff Champion Award from NAFSA (in 2016).
