Brian Whalen is Executive Director of the American International Recruitment Council (AIRC). He is also an International Education Leadership Fellow at the University at Albany; a Dean’s Fellow at Dickinson College; and an America’s Languages Fellow at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Brian was for a dozen years the President and CEO of The Forum on Education Abroad, served as resident director in Italy for the University of Dallas and for Boston University, and was the Senior International Officer at both Marist College and Dickinson College. A widely published scholar, Brian was the founder and for 25 years the editor of Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad. His publications include commentaries, essays, research articles and book chapters on a range of topics in the fields of international education and psychology. He was the founding vice-president of the Association of American College and University Programs in Italy (AACUPI); a U.S. Department of State Invited Expert delivering lectures and trainings in Brazil, Egypt, India, Israel, and Turkey; an advisor to the National Science Foundation NanoJapan Program; a peer reviewer for the Middle States Higher Education Commission and the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; chair of NAFSA’s Selection Jury for the Senator Paul Simon Campus Internationalization Award; board member and treasurer of the Pennsylvania Council for International Education; and a manuscript reviewer for Foreign Language Annals. Brian has participated in national policy level meetings at the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Education, and the White House. In 2019 Brian received a Centennial Medal from the Institute of International Education for his contributions to the field of international education. He is also a recipient of the W. LaMarr Kopp Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Council of International Education.
