Assistant Director - International Retention Specialist
Washington State University Office Of International Programs
I've worked in Higher Education or International Education for over a decade. Currently, I am the Assistant Director for International Retention for the Washington State University System. I specialize in removing institutional barriers within the University by reviewing the intersection of immigration policy and procedures with the other Institutional Departments and policies to help create a more inclusive system for International Students and Scholars. I work closely with the Dean of Student's Office, the Conduct Office, Attorney General's Office, Athletics, Registrar, Bursars Office, HR, Payroll Services, and many other academic departments and student support services. I oversee social programming as well as career development and support for international students. These efforts also include broader internationalization efforts for the system.
Previously I was the Lead International Student Advisor for the WSU system. I helped craft and update various academic policies and refined our internship/CPT opportunities both on campus and off. I also supported students with Non-Resident Tax support and related items like SSNs and ITINs. This included working to create proactive University Policies regarding tax withholdings to prevent student from having large tax obligations at the end of the year.
Before this I spent 5 years in Korea as a student, teacher, and administrator. I have been a peer advisor, academic advisor, taught English, and I was a District Coordinator for the Korean Government's English Program in Korea (EPiK) and worked with my local county on preparations for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
