International Services Specialist
Middlebury College International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS)
Loren joined the International Student and Scholar Services office at Middlebury College as his first foray into International Education in 2018. His role as the International Services Specialist involves working with data, systems, and compliance standards. He also serves as a DSO and an ARO in his office and enjoys the opportunity to engage with students by facilitating and assisting in organizing programs, events, and community conversations.
Loren became inspired to work in the field of International Education after his experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer (Philippines 2014-2016) where he worked as a Children, Youth, and Families advocate and mentor. He worked in the village of Hernani, Eastern Samar and remains closely connected with his host family and the community there.
Loren was also influenced by his studies for an International Master's Degree in Adult Education for Social Change through the University of Glasgow, University of Malta, Open University of Cyprus, and Tallinn University in Estonia. He was selected as one of 20 Erasmus Mundus Scholarship recipients and spent two years as part of a cohort of 24 individuals from 19 different countries. His immersion in this experience instilled a passion for norm-critical, and multi-cultural learning and discourse.
Loren was one of 11 recipients of the 2020-2021 NAFSA RISE Fellowship, which aims to support the professional development of underrepresented identities in the field of International Education. As part of Queer and Trans* communities, Loren works to advocate for his communities, and any other identity or community that faces oppression and erasure from society. He also works with the Middlebury College community to bring attention to campus inequities.
When not working in ISSS or engaging in advocacy work, Loren can be found doing some of his favorite Vermont activities including hiking, sledding and exploring seasonal farmers markets.
