Assoc. Vice President (retired)
Northern Illinois University
Having served as a senior international officer for nearly 18 years, Deborah Pierce is now happily retired from international education, but not from advocacy. At Northern Illinois University she was associate vice president for international affairs and adjunct assistant professor of French as well as a faculty associate of the Title VI funded Center for Southeast Asian Studies. She earned the PhD in linguistics from the University of Michigan. In 2012 - 2014 she served on the NAFSA Board as Vice President for Education and Professional Development. After retiring, she trained new advocates for two cycles in the NAFSA Academy by tailoring and presenting the program’s advocacy workshop. A NAFSA Life Member, Pierce has attended nearly every Advocacy Day since the event began and was honored to be named the 2021 Advocate of the Year.
