International Teaching and Learning Specialist

Melissa W. Hawkins, Ed.S., is the International Teaching and Learning Specialist in the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In this role, she conducts workshops for faculty focused on at-home internationalization initiatives, including how to best incorporate international students’ presence and perspectives into classrooms, and how to incorporate international and intercultural content into disciplinary curricula. In addition to graduate degrees in TESOL, she is currently a candidate for a Ph.D. in Educational Studies of Diverse Populations. Previous experience includes university teaching in Belgium, Japan, and the United States, directing a language program start-up, and managing an intensive English program. Her research interests currently focus on international faculty, intercultural identity, and the influence of university internationalization on teaching practices.
