Identifying Performance Gaps Among Incoming Chinese Undergraduates to U.S. Universities

This presentation reports on research into the value placed on knowledge areas required for university success and the perception of incoming Chinese undergraduates’ abilities among various stakeholders. Findings suggest areas of assistance that universities can provide to better support Chinese students' transition to U.S. academic life.

Identify common linguistic, academic, and sociocultural psychological challenges faced by incoming Chinese university students.
Describe features of the Chinese educational systems that may cause transitional challenges for students attending U.S. universities.
Develop both pre- and post-arrival strategies to better support Chinese students’ transitions to their undergraduate studies in the United States.
Demonstrate understanding of the gap between the value placed on specific knowledge and skills by Chinese and U.S. educators.
