Humanitarian Visas for At-Risk International Students

Have international students within the community experienced trafficking, crime, or domestic violence? Have they participated in activities that can lead to persecution back home? They may have long-term U.S. immigration options available to them, as well as community health and wellness resources. In this session, attendees build knowledge of humanitarian immigration statuses to better recognize qualifying situations and offer referrals for specialized humanitarian immigration and resource assistance. This session was selected as the Region XI conference highlight from the NAFSA 2021 All-Region Summit.

Learning Objectives:

Summarize the main eligibility requirements for U (victims of crime), T (survivors of trafficking), VAWA (domestic violence), and asylum statuses, and examining student-specific case studies.
Compare and contrast the benefits and drawbacks of U, T, VAWA, and asylum statuses.
Identify at least two resources for international student referrals to further explore humanitarian immigration relief.
