Behind the Consular Curtain

Presenters, including prominent immigration attorneys and a former consular officer, provide a better understanding of the reasons behind visa decisions to help advisers prepare your students and scholars. Learn about current issues at the U.S. Department of State, including administrative processing, problem consular posts, denials, and revocations, as well as how to overcome these issues. This session was selected as the Region XII conference highlight from the NAFSA 2021 All-Region Summit.

Learning Objectives:

Better prepare international students and scholars for visa interviews by understanding consular rules updated during the past year.
Comprehend, from a regulatory perspective, the consular decision presented to a visa applicant, and how to advise the applicant on next steps.
Discern the role of consular officers and the reasoning behind their visa adjudications.
