John Lopez Ph.D. is president of Delta Science LLC. Born in New Orleans and LSU graduate, he holds a Masters in Geology from the University of Southern California and a Ph.D. in Applied Science and Engineering from the University of New Orleans. He specializes in coastal planning of restoration and community resilience. In 2005, he developed the Multiple Lines of Defense System for coastal Louisiana which has gained broad acceptance in coastal Louisiana. He was a founding member of Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation dba/Pontchartrain Conservancy. He served on its board for two terms. From 2010 to 2014, he was Executive Director of LPBF and oversaw the reconstruction of the New Canal Lighthouse. From 2001 to 2005, he worked for the Corps of Engineers in the Coastal Restoration Branch. From 2005 to 2021, he directed LPBF’s Coast and Community Program, and he oversaw the construction of numerous restoration projects in southeast Louisiana. From 2009 to 2017, he has served on the State’s Framework Development team to advise the State on the State’s Coastal Master Plan for 2012 and 2017, and on the state Regional Planning Team for the state’s 2023 Coastal Master Plan. He served on the Coastal Advisory Committee for the South Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East, and Coastal Erosion Advisory Committee for the City of Mandeville. He chaired the Pontchartrain-Maurepas Surge and the Breton-Borgne Surge Consortiums.
