When it comes to experimenting with new approaches to stream restoration, practitioners often find they’re both “dammed” if they do by the current systems of evaluation, and “dammed” if they don’t, insofar as ecosystem outcomes are concerned. This panel will dive into these opportunities and challenges associated with using non-traditional stream restoration techniques in mitigation projects. The panelists will share the specifics of the tactics used and how they generated value, the ecological lift generated, and the regulatory and implementation obstacles they’ve encountered. Panelists and attendees will be asked to explore how lessons learned from dam removal projects on the East Coast might inform and advance the use of process-based restoration projects that are rapidly emerging throughout the West.
