Abigail Klein received her Bachelors of Science in Biology from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, and started her PhD in 2021 in the Basic Biomedical Sciences program at the University of South Dakota, where she works under the mentorship of Dr. Michelle Baack at Sanford Research in Sioux Falls, SD. Her research interest lies in the field of perinatal biology and the influences of maternal nutrition on transgenerational health. Specifically, her dissertation work uses a rat model to understand how a maternal high fat diet can disturb early embryogenesis through lipotoxicity. In addition, she is testing periconception dietary interventions to mitigate detrimental effects of maternal high fat diet on female fertility, transcriptomic and metabolic outcomes for the developing offspring as well as future generations.
