Professor and Chair
University of South Dakota, Sanford School of Medicine
Sioux Falls, SD, United States
Dr. Baack joins us from South Dakota (SD) where she is currently a neonatologist at Sanford Children's Hospital, an Associate Scientist in the Environmental Influences on Health and Disease Group at Sanford Research, and a Professor and Chair of Pediatrics at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine (USD SSOM). Dr. Baack received a Bachelor of Science from the College of Pharmacy at South Dakota State University (SDSU), then a medical degree from USD SSOM before completing her pediatric training at Creighton - UNMC Joint Pediatric Residency in Omaha, Nebraska. She practiced as a general pediatrician for ten years in her hometown of Pierre, SD before good fortune brought her to a neonatology fellowship position at the University of Iowa in 2008. In a rich academic environment with encouragement from incredible mentors such as Jeffrey Segar, Andrew Norris, and Tarah Colaizy, she developed a passion for research. She returned home to build basic and translational research platforms that focus on understanding the role of fatty acids in the developmental origin of health and disease (DOHaD). The Baack lab found that mitochondria play a central role in developmentally programmed heart disease in offspring exposed to maternal dyslipidemia and diabetic pregnancy. Their overarching goal is to find translational interventions that improve mitochondrial function, metabolism and prevent cardiovascular disease in not only one, but subsequent generations. She also continues working with her Iowa colleagues as their satellite site's principal investigator for NICHD Neonatal Research Networks (NRN) trials. Dr. Baack is delighted and grateful to join the Midwest Society for Pediatric Research for networking and scientific exchange at the Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, IL.
