Every year the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) conducts the June Area Survey (JAS). The JAS is based on an area frame, which has complete coverage of the conterminous U.S. Face-to-face interviews have been the primary mode of data collection for the JAS, with some telephone follow-ups. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the JAS was conducted in 2021 via mail and telephone with limited face-to-face visits. Different administrative and non-survey data resources were utilized in 2021 for estimation. This paper compares the quality of the new estimation methods with those of surveys conducted prior to the pandemic.
