Behavioral phase change initiates and functionally couples the suite of traits that comprise density-dependent polyphenism in locusts. I will provide a brief account of my interdisciplinary research journey exploring the dynamics and mechanisms of behavioral phase change, mainly in the desert locust, and its implications for group behaviour, population dynamics and swarm management.
