Humans began wearing clothing for utilitarian reasons, but clothing rapidly became a mechanism representing social status and cultural values. So, the study of fashion gives us insight into human society. Insect imagery has been found represented in fashion items in multiple cultures throughout history. What does this history tell us about relationships between humans and insects? Here, we look at how insect imagery has been used in modern textile fashion design. The use of insects in fashion design are often associated with designers that are known for pushing boundaries and intending to make their audiences uncomfortable with the novel use of new themes and materials. From Elsa Schiaparellie to Alexander McQueen, fashion designers intentionally connect to a visceral discomfort caused by the appearance of insects and insect swarms. Insects possess a unique combination of visual graphic beauty and an ability to elicit memorable emotional responses. Designers use insects as a tool to intentionally shock and delight audiences. While insects can be an object of fear for many, the use of insect imagery on fashion may help to increase familiarity and fascination for an often misunderstood group.
