Enhanced persistence of entomopathogenic nematodes based on a novel capsule formulation

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) are used as biocontrol agents for managing arthropod pests. However, EPN field efficacy and persistence can vary depending on various biotic and abiotic conditions. We compared a novel capsule formulation for the infective juveniles (IJs) of the EPN Steinernema feltiae ENO2 strain to traditional aqueous application of IJs for persistence under both laboratory and field conditions. Persistence was evaluated by baiting with the larvae of Tenebrio molitor at different times after inoculation. In the laboratory soil-cup test, an aqueous application of S. feltiae SN strain was added to compare with ENO2 strain and showed longer persistence; the capsule formulation exhibited increased persistence relative to aqueous applications of both SN and ENO2 strains. The results were confirmed in field tests, showing longer EPN persistence in the capsule formulation than in aqueous applications. These findings suggest potential of the novel capsule formulation for providing more persistent and effective control of insect pests compared with aqueous applications.
